An opinionated list of awesome FOSS :
This is a bookmark for great open-source software and utilities i know, i’ll try to only mention good software thats a bit unkown or under apprecieted and organize the list over time, for now lets start small.
Editors :
- Marktext : A dead-simple, Elegant and feature rich markdown editor.
- Micro : A successor for Nano, it fully supports mouse integration and common shortcuts like
ctrl+candctrl+v, useful for quickly editing files. - Neovim : The true best foss code editor, a “build your own IDE” software.
- Notepad++ : another dead simple good code editor, can be used as a replacement for Micro on Windows.
Windows specific :
- SumatraPDF : Lightweight and efficient pdf reader for windows,not available for Linux but runs fine with wine.
- windirstat : A windows directory and files analyzer.
- Cygwin : Use GNU utilities but on Windows.
- PowerToys : A collection of utilities to customize windows.
Image / Video tools :
- XnView MP : This is NOT FOSS but a FREEWARE for private and non-commercial use, but the program is just too good not to mention.
- VLC : The well known Audio and Video player.
- OpenShot : dead simple video editor if you’re just looking to cut videos and apply basic editing.
- HandBrake : Extremely efficient video transcoder, useful for video compression.
- Clementine : a PERFECT music player.
Gaming :
- Sunshine : A game streaming host application.
- Moonlight : A game streaming client application.
- PCSX2 : Feature rich ps2 emulator with a clean interface.
- LucasChessR2 : not exactly gaming but a chess swiss-army knife.
Disk Utilities :
- Ventoy : Run multiple isos from the same USB without burning any iso.
- gparted : Versatile disk management and partitioning utility.
- Timeshift : make backups of your system.
- Rufus : make bootable usbs fast on windows.
whiteboarding :
- xournal++ : Awesome software for handwriting.
- Mermaid : Make graphs and UML diagrams with text, very compatible with markdown.
- excalidraw : The best whiteboarding site ( can be self-hosted ) out there.
- drawdb : awesome for database design.
Documents management :
- Okular : very good PDF reader for linux systems.
- Stirling-pdf : An all in one pdf management tools and swiss-army knife.
- Pandoc : A cheatcode for converting files from a format to another.
- Reaveal.js : Make stunning presentations using HTML.
- ocrmypdf : A tesseract wrapper for ocring pdfs.
Terminal :
- Alacritty : Fast and simple terminal emulator, very compatible with tmux.
- fish : User friendly and a no-config shell, yet still customizable.
- SauceCodePro nerdfont.
- Cheat.sh : You have the internet and curl ? access concise docs from the terminal.
- Tmux : Never quit the terminal :-)
File transfer :
- Syncthing : The best file syncing program.
- Transmission : simple torrenting program.
Misc :
- uv : An all in one python packages and projects manager.
- pypy : python but JIT compiled.
- Flameshot : awesome and multi-feature screenshots program.
- yt-dlp : video / audio downloader.
- gallery-dl : image downloader.
- Manim : Make beautiful Math animations.
